Eleanor L. Romes, 97, Enjoyed Gardening and Shopping

Photo of Eleanor L. Romes Eleanor L. “Babe” Romes (nee Flaczynski), age 97, of Lorain, passed away at Mercy New Life Hospice on the morning of Friday February 2, 2024.

Born in Lorain on March 24, 1926, Eleanor was a graduate of Lorain High School and a life-long resident of the city.

In her younger years she was employed at Kraka’s Café and Sutter’s Restaurant. During the war effort she worked for the American Stove Company and, later, for its successor Lorain Stove Works She subsequeslty joined the production team at Mascon Toy Company, and completed her working career as a sorter for the Nelson Stud Division of TRW Corporation in both Lorain and Elyria.

Eleanor was a parishioner of Nativity BVM Catholic Church in Lorain and a member of the United Polish Club as well as the P.L.A.V. Drill Team.

In her free time she enjoyed gardening, shopping, day trips, and casino junkets. She was also an accomplished baker offering cheesecake and apple squares as two of her favorite dishes.

She leaves her daughter Barbara Grasso, and sons Richard Romes, Robert Romes (Cheryl), and David Romes (Ginger), along with daughter-in-law Debby Romes. Additional survivors include seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Eleanor was preceded in death by her husband Robert S. Romes, daughter Carol Ann Simko, parents Stanley and Katherine (nee Siatkowski) Flaczynski, son-in-law Larry Simko, sister Geraldine Flaczynski, and brother Ralph Flaczynski.

Visitation will take place Wednesday February 7th in Nativity BVM Catholic Church – 1454 Lexington Avenue, Lorain from 11:00 a.m. until the time of her Mass of Christian Burial at 12:00 noon. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery.
