Maria "Kitty" Mateo, 86, A Strong, Funny, and Caring Person

Photo of Maria Maria “Kitty” Mateo, 86, of Lorain, passed away on Sunday, December 10, 2023. She was born in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico on October 27, 1937.

She moved to Ohio as a young girl in high school with her loving parents and her two brothers. She attended Lorain High School.

Maria and her ex-husband, Victor Figueroa Matos, were successful small business owners. They owned and operated three grocery stores called Matos Food Market and then Eagles Café a bar and restaurant in the South Lorain. They had two daughters but years later they divorced. Maria remarried to Jesus "Jesse" Mateo her husband of 35 years. She also worked as an aid at the Lutheran Nursing in Westlake, Ohio.

Maria was a hard-working woman, she was strong, funny, and caring person and her passion was her family. She was the happiest when her home was filled with her family. Maria was a great cook. She truly enjoyed cooking and feeding her family and friends. Maria’s smile, great sense of humor, and lively personality will be greatly missed.

Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Miriam Liberty, and Eledis “Lidy” Torres, brother Max Castillo of Vieques, Puerto Rico, grandchildren, Miriam Engle, Marco Serrano, Cristina Adams, Celina Serrano-Spang, fifteen great grandchildren, and three great-great grandchildren.

Maria was preceded in death by her husband Jesus Mateo; parents Dionisia and Pedro Castillo, and brother, Herman Castillo.

The daughters and family are extremely grateful for the remarkable care the staff at Avon Oaks Nursing Home, especially the Porter Pavilion staff who treated her like she was one of their family.

Her family will receive friends at the Richard J. Reidy Funeral Home, 1783 East 31 Street, South Lorain, Thursday, December 14, 2023, from 3 to 7 PM. Also at Sacred Heart Chapel, 4301 Pearl Ave, Lorain, Friday from 8:30 until 9:30 AM Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 AM. Rev. Father Willian A. Thaden, pastor will officiate. Interment will follow at Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst.

He family suggests contributions to Sacred Memorial Fund.
