Jack R. Johannsen, 84, U.S. Navy Veteran

Photo of Jack R. Johannsen Jack R. Johannsen, 84, of Lorain passed away Wednesday, Jan. 6, 2016 at Elmcroft of Lorain following a brief illness.

Mr. Johannsen was born in Lorain on April 5, 1931, the son of the late Carl and Myrtle (nee Penrod) Johannsen. He was a graduate of Lorain High in the class of 1949. He had attended the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer.

He was a veteran of the US Navy ; serving during the Korean War. He earned the National Defense Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Occupation Service Medal. He was assigned to the USS Macon.

Mr. Johannsen was a retired engineering assistant and switchman at Centurytel in Lorain, with 39 years of service. He retired in 1994. He then served the Crystal Cove Condominium Association, where he lived, as maintenance manager for 8 years. He was a very active member of the Crystal Cove Condominium Association and served several terms on it's board of directors.

He was an avid photographer; an art that he began while in the Navy. He was commissioned to photograph many weddings and his late wife would assemble his pictures into a wedding book. He enjoyed boating, fishing and ice skating. He also enjoyed taking trips to Amish Country and Maumee Bay State Park with his granddaughter and going out to lunch with his daughters and granddaughter.

Jack is survived by a son Terry L. (Laurie) Johannsen of Columbus, daughters, Debbie A. (Dennis Meyers) Johannsen of Amherst, Jody A. (Terry) Holmes of Vermilion, grandchildren, David Johannsen and Jennifer Holmes.

In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his wife of almost 50 years Jean K. (nee Lynch) Johannsen on Feb. 4, 2000, brothers Carl Johannsen, George Johannsen, sisters Florence Wilson, Gerry Tremaine , Ann Majesi, Jenny, and Erma Berry-Bahl.

Friends may call on Sunday, Jan. 10, 2016 from 2:00 p.m. until services at 4:00 p.m. in the Schwartz, Spence, Boyer & Cool Home For Funerals, 1124 W. 5th Street, Lorain. The Rev. Lisa Morrison, associate pastor of the Lorain Lighthouse United Methodist Church, officiating.

Burial will be private on Monday in Ridge Hill Memorial Park, Amherst Township with full military honors provided by the Lorain Honor Guard.

The family suggest that memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Western Reserve, 2173 N Ridge Rd E, Suite H, Lorain, OH 44055.
