William H. Whitehead, 85, Korean War Veteran

Photo of William H. Whitehead William H. “Bill” Whitehead, 85, of Lorain, died Thursday November 19, 2015 at his home surrounded by his loving family.

He was born May 5, 1930 in Flint, Michigan and had resided in Lorain since 1959 moving from Norwalk.

Bill grew up in Norwalk and graduated from Norwalk High School in 1948. He served with the US Navy during the Korean War aboard the USS Albany and was awarded the Navy Occupation Medal with European Clasp and the National Defense Service Medal.

Bill worked for the Lorain Journal as Director of Data Processing for over 40 years retiring in 1993.

He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church in Lorain where he was active in Catholic Family Movement (CFM). He was an avid golfer and sports fan and enjoyed reading, traveling and spending time with his family.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years Mary Lou Whitehead (nee Sullivan); children Kathleen (James) Shreiner of South Bend, Indiana, Bill (Sandi) Whitehead of Avon, Karen (Steve) Huth of Eaton Rapids, Michigan, Patti (James) Pirc of Upper Sandusky, Colleen “Kelly” (Todd) King of Lorain, Jennifer (Brian) Wareham of Noblesville, Indiana and Rebecca Berry of Lorain; grandchildren Anne Shreiner (Chris Fletcher), Audrey Shreiner, Kristin Whitehead, Ashleigh Whitehead, Steven Huth, Kaitlyn Huth, Nicole Viet, Melody Pirc, Austin Pirc, Aaron Pirc, Mackenzie King, Justin Wareham, Morgan Wareham, Colin Wareham and Evan Wareham; great grandchild Able King and sister Pam (Harold “Bud”) Hopler of Terra Haute, Indiana. He was preceded in death by his father William W. Whitehead, mother Charlotte Simons (nee Chandler) and brother Robert Simons.

The family will receive friends Monday 2-4, 6-8 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain and on Tuesday from 10:00 – 11:00 am at St. Mary Catholic Church, 310 8th St, Lorain. The mass of Christian burial will follow on Tuesday at 11:00 am in the church with the Rev. Daniel Divis, pastor, officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
