John Newman, 93, U.S. Navy Veteran

John (Jack) William Newman, a retired physician formerly of Avon Lake, Ohio, died peacefully September 25, 2013, at the age of 93 in Lihue, Hawaii, following a brief illness.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Dorothy, and his two brothers, Bruce and Eugene. He is survived by three children, three grandchildren, and one great-grandchild. He said that he had a wonderful life.

Prior to moving to Hawaii with his wife in the mid 1970’s, he practiced medicine in Avon Lake, Ohio for over twenty years. He completed a second residency in Internal Medicine in Honolulu and joined a medical group on the Hawaiian island of Kauai after sampling other islands. When he saw Kauai, he told his wife it was so beautiful it was where he wanted to die; she suggested they try living there first, which they did for several years working in the small town of Koloa. He then went on to work six years in Kwajalein, Marshall Islands, in the South Pacific, returning to retire in Kauai.

Jack served as a U.S. Naval officer in the Pacific during World War II, after earning his MD from the University of Toronto Faculty of Medicine in Canada. He was a multi-sport college athlete, active in track and field, football and “lettered” in baseball. Athletic well into his 90s, Jack was an avid golfer who was proud of having hit a hole-in-one. At his request, there will be no funeral. Donations in his memory will be gratefully accepted by Kauai Hospice, 4457 Pahee Street, Lihue, HI 96766.
