George Karras, 82, Army Veteran and Loving Husband
George Karras (Karmogiannis), age 82, of Lorain, passed away peacefully at his residence on the morning of Sunday December 16, 2012.
He was born in Lorain on June 13, 1930 and remained a life-long resident of the city; George was a graduate of Lorain High School.
He went on to serve in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict fulfilling duty assignments as a Private attached to the 4745th Light Infantry Division and was presented with the American Campaign Ribbon. He was a member of Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
Mr. Karras was employed for more than thirty-five years as a Boiler Engineer at U.S. Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works; while working there, he was a member of United Steelworkers’ Local # 1104.
George was a member of St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church and a former member of A.H.E.P.A.
In his free time he enjoyed playing cards and possessed a special passion for poker. He also enjoyed solving crossword puzzles as well as spending time maintaining his yard.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years Sophia (nee Roubeka), by his son James Karras residing in Columbus, and by his daughter Alexandra (Sotiris) Karamouzis residing in New York, New York. In addition he leaves granddaughters Fotini, Sophia, Anastasia, and Alexia, his brother Nicholas Karmogiannis of Lorain, his sister Mary (Richard) Noblitt, of Chester, Virginia, and a host of nieces and nephews.
George was preceded in death by his father James Karmogiannis in 1974, by his mother Alexandra (nee Triantafillou) in 2002, and by his sister Helen Mutich in 2001.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain with a Trisayion Service at 7:00 p.m. Funeral services will be Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church, 2000 Tower Boulevard with the Reverend Michael Gulgas, presiding. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with military honors will be conducted by Louis Paul Proy Chapter # 20 of the Disabled American Veterans.
