Thomas Faris, 74, USS/Kobe Retiree

Photo of Thomas Faris Thomas W. Faris, 74, died Sunday May 29, 2011, at the Cleveland Clinic, following a lengthy and courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was born October 18, 1936 in Lorain.

Tom spent his early childhood in Amherst before returning to Lorain where he attended Irving Elementary School. Tom graduated in June 1954 Class B from the original Lorain High School.

Tom served in the United States Air Force from June 1954 until December 1957. He completed basic training in New York and was stationed in Mississippi and Alaska. He also enlisted in the Air Force Reserve and was honorably discharged in 1962. In March 1962, Tom graduated from The Ohio State University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration.

Tom worked for 35 years for U.S. Steel and USS/Kobe in Lorain. Tom was employed in plant management in the Bar Mill until his retirement in 1996. In 1996, Tom worked as a part time driver for Enterprise Rent-A-Car and entered full retirement in 2006.

He was a member of the Catholic Church of St. Peter, the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion, all of Lorain. Tom was an avid Ohio State football fan and Cleveland Browns fan. He enjoyed meeting his twin brother for breakfast and meeting his fellow US Steel retirees.

Survivors include his wife of 48 years, Marcia Faris, (nee Bremer). His twin brother Ron Faris of The Villages, Fla. Tom is also survived by his five children, Amy Krafcik, (nee Faris), Andrew Faris, Ellen Faris, Pam Faris all of Lorain, and Julie Henderson, (nee Faris), of Simi Valley California, five grandchildren, Ana, Alex, and Aaron Krafcik of Lorain, and Jack and Jared Henderson of Simi Valley, California, along with several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by an enormous extended family that were near and dear to his heart.

Tom was preceded in death by his parents Wood P. Faris and Eva May Faris (nee Orcutt).

The family will receive friends Friday 4- 8:30 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 11:15 am in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 11:45 am at the Catholic Church of St. Peter, 3655 Oberlin Ave, Lorain. The Rev. Craig Hovanec, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain where the VFW Post #451 and American Legion #30, both of Lorain, will conduct military honors
