An Extraordinary Oberlinian: Adelia A. Field Johnston, 1837-1910

October 23, 2007 — Art Historian Marcia Goldberg will present a look at �An Extraordinary Oberlinian: Adelia A. Field Johnston, 1837-1910� as part of the fall series of community programs. The event takes place on Tuesday, October 30 at 7:15 p.m. in Heiser Auditorium at Kendal at Oberlin. The program is free and open to the public.

Adelia Field Johnston was the first woman professor at Oberlin College. She also was the first woman professor at a co-educational college. She was initially hired at Oberlin College in 1870 as principal of the Women�s Department. She later became Professor of Medieval History. Johnston not only made significant contributions to the College, but as a founder of the Village Improvement Society, and perhaps its most active member, she was a great force in beautifying the town of Oberlin. The Village Improvement Society, founded in 1903, was a predecessor to today�s Oberlin Heritage Center.

Marcia Goldberg is an art historian who also enjoys writing about local history. She received her M.A. from Oberlin College and has published articles in a number of art history and historical society journals as well as Oberlin College publications.
