In the past few weeks Diane Medina has found 6 more of our residents who were taken to their final resting place in the Charleston Village Pioneer Cemetery. Diane tells us “These five persons were found on September 16, 2006. Charles C. Baldwin Died Oct 21, 1850 AE 24y 8m 16d.
Henry C. Baldwin Drowned in Propeller H. Clay Oct 24,-----AE 22
Glover C. Died Aug 12, 1833 AE 9 y 5m ---d
Henry C. Died--- 18-9 AE 4m 27d
Ann P. Died Nov 12, 1833 AE 4m 23d
The two older children (young adults) share one gravestone. The three children consisting of a 9 year old and two infants share one stone as well.
This is what I had in my files under Daniel T. Baldwin their father. Charles C. Baldwin was born on Jan 5, 1826 and married Miranda Sanford. They had two children: John R. Baldwin was born in 1846. Eleanor was born on July 1, 1849.Charles died on Oct 21, 1850. HIS CHILDREN:
John R. married Addie R. Bickford on Sept 14, 1871. They had one child that I am aware of: Florence Baldwin
Eleanor married Charles Howard and had at least one child that I am aware of..Eugene Baldwin Howard who was born in 1873.
The census has things somewhat mixed up, so that has confused me. The three small children buried with one stone, have not been on the census at least two of them, census is every ten years... I am somewhat uncertain but the Charles that I located might have been remarried to a woman named Adailia. Not sure at the moment.
Henry C. Baldwin drowned in the propeller Henry Clay which went down on Oct 24, 1851. Only one person survived.. Henry was second engineer. Only the captain and a female passenger were found and buried. the others were never located. The wreck occurred at Lake Point Canada. Orestus Root was aboard as well he was from Black River and his body was never recovered. He was the cousin of Aaron Root who happened to be the captain and once owner of this Henry Clay ship. There is a Canadian website go to http://www.hhpl.on.ca/GreatLakes /Wrecks/details.asp?ID=9535
I looked up Henry Clay ship October 24, 1851
Also the gravestone of Mary wife of Daniel Rice died on Dec 19, 1847 AE 21 y I located her on Labor Day 2006.
I found out her father -in-law was Abram Rice who came to this area in 1822 from Fayette County Pennsylvania. Her mother-in-law was Margaret Stacker. They had 14 children, the second oldest was Daniel Mary (Smith) Rice's husband. Her husband Daniel moved in 1850 to Arroyo Grande California. He married Isabelle who was from Kentucky and had 5 children. Four girls and a son. Daniel was very well known in that town, he was known for his design of the Corduroy Road. And an article was located by Maureen Conrad Smith on a story of Daniel Rice in a newsletter from their local historical society back in 2004 in Arroyo Grande."
