John K. Cook, 67, Avid Bowler and Dedicated Sports Fan

Photo of John K. Cook John K. ”Cooker” Cook, age 67, of Amherst, and formerly of Sheffield Lake, passed away at the Ames Family Hospice in Westlake on the morning of Monday March 18, 2024 following a brief illness.

Born in Lorain, he was a graduate of Brookside High School where he was a varsity letterman on the Cardinal Basketball team. He joined the United States Steel Corporation in 1977 and served the steel producer until 2002; during his employment there, he was a member of United Steelworkers Local 1104. Shortly thereafter, he founded J.C.’S Windshield Repair in Sheffield Lake and served as the proprietor of the entity until 2018.

A member of the Sheffield Lake United Church of Christ, John was an avid bowler and a dedicated sports fan and loyal supporter of all three Cleveland professional sports franchises as well as the Ohio State Buckeyes. For more than three decades he also served as a coach of both boys and girls baseball, softball, football, and basketball through the CYO and Sheffield Lake Recreational Programs. Other leisurely interests included music, camping, motorcycles, and auto racing.

He was a long-time member of Amvets Post # 55 and VFW Post # 8686 both of Sheffield Lake as well as the Loyal Order of the Moose Lodge # 778 of Elyria.

Survivors include his wife Linda A. Cook (nee Wobig) along with children Vanessa Roberts and Richard Cook (Samantha), Michael Burns (Rachael), Ryan Burns (Brandy), Kevin Burns (Kristen), and Robert Burns (Misty). In addition, he leaves grandchildren Xavier Roberts, Lily Cook, Anthony Burns (Inez), Tori Burns, Hailey Russell (Jake), Ryan Burns, Brendan Burns, Kellen Burns, Jenna Burns, Kaitlyn Burns and Jack Burns as well as sister Marlyn R. Cook.

He was preceded in death by his father Robert M. Cook in 1998, mother Mildred P. Cook (nee Dumke) in 1995, and brother Richard A. Cook in 1965).

Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 until 8:00p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel - 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. An additional celebration of John’s life will be observed Friday from 1:00 until 4:00 p.m. in Amvets Post # 55 – 530 North Abbe Road, Sheffield Lake, Ohio.

In lieu of flowers, contributions in his memory are encouraged to either the Hospice of the Western Reserve or a charity of the donor’s choice.
