Stephen W. Gaydosh, 86, U.S. Army Veteran

Photo of Stephen W. Gaydosh Stephen W. Gaydosh, age 86, of Amherst, passed away peacefully at the home of his daughter on the afternoon of Friday June 4, 2021 following an extended illness.

Steve was born in Lorain on July 28, 1934 and remained a resident of the city until he relocated to Amherst in the early 1970’s. He was a graduate of St. Mary’s Academy.

Following his graduation, he was inducted into the United States Army where he fulfilled duty assignments as a Private First Class attached to the 73rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Battery based in Fort Dix, New Jersey; he was the recipient of the Army Good Conduct Medal.

He had been employed as a machine operator at U.S. Steel Corporation’s Lorain-Cuyahoga Works as well as its successor – USS Kobe. He retired in 1996 following a career that spanned a quarter century with the steel producers.

Steve was a long-time parishioner of the former Holy Trinity Church in Lorain where he was active with the Holy Name Society as well as the Holy Trinity Seniors. In addition, he was a member of St. Ann’s Fraternal Lodge Branch # 114 as well as Wreath # 111 of the Slovak Catholic Sokols. Steve later joined St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst where he was active with the St. Joseph Seniors group.

He was an avid fan of all Cleveland professional sports franchises and especially enjoyed baseball and football. Additional interests included bowling and building model military aircraft.

He is survived by his son Mark Gaydosh, and daughters Marie DeRuchie (Timothy) and Nancy Solak (Lane). He also leaves grandchildren Crystal, Austin, Nicole, Felicia, Kristina, Bryan, Samantha, and Shannon, great grandchildren Kaylee and Madalin, and sisters Marilyn Yarza (Ronald) and Eileen Niemiec (Thomas).

Steve was preceded in death by his wife Anna Mae Gaydosh (nee Meade), father Stephen A. Gaydosh, mother Ann Gaydosh (nee Demyan), and brother Gerald P. “Jerry” Gaydosh.

Visitation will be Wednesday from 2:00 – 4:00 & 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel – 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. A Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted Thursday at 11:00 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church – 200 St. Joseph Drive, Amherst. (Please meet at the church.) The Reverend Timothy O’Connor, pastor of the parish will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemeterty.
