Helen A. Gordon, 89, Enjoyed doing special things for others

Photo of Helen A. Gordon Helen A. Gordon (nee Freska), 89, of Amherst, died Thursday June 2, 2016 at Ames Family Hospice House in Westlake.

She was born March 14, 1927 in Lorain and had lived in the Amherst, Lorain and Elyria areas most of her life.

Helen attended Holy Trinity School in Lorain and Lorain High School.

She was a lifelong waitress having worked at the Antlers Hotel in Lorain, Spring Valley Country Club and Elyria Country Club. She was a fine waitress who came to know all of her customers, took pride in her service and trained new waitresses. She also had worked for the Ohio Turnpike from 1958-1960.

Helen helped clean fish at the Slovenian Home in Lorain for their Friday fish fry. She enjoyed music, reading, painting and had a good sense of humor. She loved her family and her neighbors and, since she had a servant’s heart, she enjoyed doing special things for them.

She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Amherst.

She is survived by her daughter Iva (Donald) Rilling of Lancaster, Kentucky; grandchildren Troy (Paula) Gordon of Bellevue, Nebraska, Rebecca Daley of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Bethany (Gordon) Perfater of Knoxville, Maryland, Jason Gordon (Heather) of Bowling Green, Kentucky, Christopher Gordon of Columbus and Brandon Gordon of Amherst; 19 great grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 34 years Everett Gordon on December 19, 1978; sons: Edward Gordon, Michael A. “Iron Mike” Gordon and Ben Johnson; parents Andrew Freska Sr and Christine Freska (nee Jakus); brother Andrew Freska Jr, half brother Paul Sedmack and half sister Mary Kotora.

The family will receive friends Monday June 6, 2016 from 4:00-7:00 pm at the Gluvna-Shimo- Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave, Lorain. Additional viewing will be held on Tuesday June 7, 2016 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am in the chapel at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 200 St. Joseph Dr, Amherst.

The mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:00 am in the church with the Rev. Timothy O’Connor, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
