Effie Garrett, 95, Avid Sports Fan

Photo of Effie Garrett Effie Garrett, (nee Taylor), age 95, of Lorain passed away on the morning of December 13, 2013 while a resident of Amherst Manor Nursing Home.

She was born in Russellville, Alabama on March 10, 1918 and had been a resident of Lorain since 1940; Effie had previously resided in Cleveland.

Mrs. Garrett was formerly employed as a sales associate for Scott’s Dime Store and Karnik’s Variety Store both in Lorain.

She, along with her late husband Rather A. Garrett, was a founding member of the Toledo Road Church of Christ (now the Lorain Church of Christ).

Effie was an avid sports fan who was especially fond of baseball. Additional interests included quilting, baking, and gardening.

She is survived by he daughter-in-law Patricia Garrett (nee Ksenich) of Lorain, by grandchildren Stephen Garrett, Russell Kostoff (Kellie), Sandra Garrett, Susan Pearl, Kathy Fullerton, Lori Kostoff, Karen Espenshied, Diane Dennis, and Sandy Kostoff, along with 18 great grandchildren, four great-great grandchildren, and her half sister Maglene Clause.

Mrs. Garrett was preceded in death by her husband Rather A. Garrett in 1989, by her daughter Wilodean Kostoff in 2001, by her son Almon Garrett in 2003, four sisters and six brothers.

Visitation will be Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Funeral services will be Monday at 11:00 a.m. in the Lorain Church of Christ, 5075 Toledo Road, Sheffield Township. Reverend Bob Eddy, will officiate. Burial will follow in Ridge Hill Memorial Park.

Mrs. Garrett’s family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to Sola and Bud Collier and Linda and Joe Opalski for the assistance and friendship they have provided in assisting with Effie’s care.
