Yeomen Start New Year and Cap California Swing with a Win at Caltech

January 5, 2015 — A strong defensive effort spearheaded the men's basketball team to a 67-44 win over the Caltech Beavers on Friday afternoon.

The Yeomen forced the Beavers into 24 turnovers and came away with 14-steals, 10 of which came in the first half. The 24 miscues, which resulted in 26 Yeomen points, tied a season-high for any Yeomen opponent this year.the

Offensively, sophomore Jack Poyle led the way with 17 points as he connected on four 3-pointers in the victory. Classmate Nathan Cohen added 11 points, while junior Randy Ollie nearly had a double-double with 12 points and nine rebounds. After missing the last two games with injury, Zach Meyers added eight points off the bench on 3-of-5 shooting while matching Cohen with a game-high four assists.

It was nip-and-tuck throughout the first half as no more than seven points separated the two teams. The Yeomen held an early 9-6 advantage before the Beavers methodically worked their way to a seven-point lead at 25-18 with four minutes to go in the stanza. However, the Yeomen responded by closing the frame with 10-0 run take a 28-25 cushion into the intermission.

The Yeomen would never trail in the second half, eventually taking their first double-digit lead of the game, 44-33, on freshman Sam Kreisberg's tip-in with 7:28 to go. Oberlin would continue to pour it on from there, out-scoring the Beavers 23-10 to end the game and finish their California swing with a victory.

Oberlin shot 48-percent (24-of-50) and were much improved from 3-point range where they cashed in 7-of-19 triple-tries for a 36.8-percent clip. The Yeomen also had one of their best games of the season at the free throw line with 12 makes on 15 attempts (80%).

Oberlin's defense played a large part in the Beavers shooting just 35.4-percent (17-of-48), which included a 2-of-13 showing from downtown.

With the win the Yeomen evened their record at 6-6, while the Beavers fell to 1-8 on the season.

The Yeomen will return home and return to conference play at Saturday, January 10 at the College of Wooster. Tip-time is set for 4 p.m.
