July 24, 2009 --
The August 8th, 2009 Ohio Outdoor Quilt Festival, held annually in Wellington (Website | Profile), is issuing its yearly invitation to quilt owners to display their quilts at the show. The event, which is the largest outdoor quilt festival East of the Mississippi, hangs over 400 quilts on the century old buildings of Bonnie Brae Farm Tours (Website | Profile).
Any and all quilts can be displayed at the Festival. Many families display vintage quilts, which have been in their families for generations. Quilters bring colorful bed quilts and wall hangings they have only recently completed. Visitors at the Festival vote for their favorite quilts. There are cash prizes as well as medals for the quilts with the most votes. Everyone who exhibits a quilt receives a ticket for free admission to the festival.
Blue and white quilts will be featured in a special display at the 2009 event. Quilt owners with blue and white quilts are encouraged to bring them to add to the collection for the day.
To enter, bring your quilt to Bonnie Brae Farms, 27717 Quarry Road, Wellington during business hours (10 a.m. to 5 p.m.) prior to August 5th, 2009. You may call (440) 647-3232 in advance to be certain of directions or details about entering quilts.
Quilts will also be for sale at the festival. Anyone with a quilt they would like to sell, can bring it to the elk farm, where it will be displayed for sale during the festival. For example, included in the sale this year is a Depression Era quilt, which had been donated to Oberlin’s Kendal Retirement Community (Website | Profile) in support of their advancement program. In addition to vintage quilts, quilters often sell their current works, both bed sized and wall hangings.
Special trophies will be awarded in memory of Susan Gail Westbrook and Ellen Louise Mourton, both of Rochester Township.
The 2009 Ohio Outdoor Quilt Festival will run from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 8th. Parking for the event is free and handicapped parking is available. Lunch is available on the grounds at either a lunch room under the trees or a fast food stand offering elk barbeque, elk bratwurst and economical beef hot dogs. A quilt boutique will be open in a log cabin on the farm as well as a farm gift shop, several local crafters and a “Fat Quarter” stand. There will be a drawing for an oversized basket of quilting supplies. Two local charities will be displaying raffle quilts. Wagon rides into the fields to see the elk herd, will be available.
Bonnie Brae Farms is located on Quarry Road in Southern Lorain County between Route 162 and Stewart Road. Entry $5. Additional charge for wagon ride. Parking is free.
