UFAJ Accomplishments
What has UFAJ accomplished in its first 18 months?
UFAJ has been working with the county to improve the county kennel
- UFAJ has built a cooperative relationship with the county government
- In 2005, the county kennel
- Changed the name from "Pound" to "Kennel"
- Installed surveillance cameras
- Painted the kennel pick-up trucks with paw prints and slogans
- Developed very nice brochures about the kennel
- Developed flyers to hang at businesses
- Advertised available dogs at the Board of Commissioners weekly meetings that are televised by Comcast
- Advertised the kennel on county buses
- Advertised the county kennel on the radio
- Advertised available dogs in 8 parades
- Advertised available dogs at the Lorain County Fair
UFAJ sincerely thanks the County Commissioners and the Dog Warden for these changes.
- In 2006, the county:
- started using an anti-viral solution that kills Parvo, AIDS, Hepatitis A, and Hepatitis B
- starting posting some of their dogs on Petfinder.com
- announced publicly at one of the weekly commissioners that they are initiating a spay and neuter program at the county kennel. UFAJ greatly appreciates Commissioner Kalo for spearheading this effort and thanks the other commissioners for supporting it.
UFAJ also recognizes Administrative Assistant Toni Shanahan who serves as the county's main liaison to UFAJ. Toni Shanahan really has a heart for the dogs and she spearheaded many of these improvements.
UFAJ has been assisting Operation Petfix with their efforts to increase the availability of low cost spay and neuter surgeries to Lorain County residents and rescues.
UFAJ has been building relationships and learning techniques to improve the prosecution of people who abuse and criminally neglect animals.
