LCCC Students In Free Enterprise to Open Store
Steve Sefchik, LCCC Media Relations Coordinator

January 18, 2009 -- Lorain County Community College (Website | Profile) Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) will host a grand opening for its SIFE Store at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Jan. 23, 2009. Dr. Roy Church, president of LCCC, will preside over the ribbon-cutting ceremony to officially open the SIFE Store for business. The SIFE Store is located at 5296 Detroit Road, Sheffield Village, in the plaza next to Drug Mart.

Store hours will be Thursdays from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The SIFE Store is a student-run business featuring discounted used office furniture that the college is no longer using. Some of the featured furniture includes:

  • Wooden Stools

  • Lounge Chairs — Faux Leather

  • Study Carrels

  • Lecterns

  • Periodical Shelving

  • Vertical File Cabinets

  • Microfilm Cabinets

  • Tables

  • Desks

  • Bookcases

  • Storage Cabinets and more

One of the criteria that the LCCC SIFE team has to meet is the establishment of its own business. In the past LCCC SIFE teams sold food on campus.

"Dr. Church has afforded us an amazing opportunity to actually run a business from the ground up. We jumped at this opportunity since it really does involve all of the facets of entrepreneurship, and we have never had a project of this magnitude," said SIFE adviser Maria McConnell. "The successes and failures are our own and are lifelong learning experiences."

The students are also using the profits from the sales of this business to fund other projects and to cover some of the costs of the SIFE Team attending regional and national competitions this year.

"The SIFE Store presents students the opportunity for practical application of what they have learned in the classroom. Students will get hands on experience in running a business from the ground up. This endeavor will allow students to practice what they have studied and gain valuable experience that they can use in their future career explorations," McConnell added.

The public is invited to the grand opening. If any organization would like to make an appointment to view the merchandise at any other time, contact Christopher Box, store Manager, at (440) 897-3640 or professor Maria McConnell, SIFE adviser at (440) 366-7404.

SIFE is a non-profit student organization at LCCC. For more information on SIFE visit www.sife.org.
