Brown Announces Congressional Art Contest Winners
Micah said he attempted to create an updated version of Dutch artist Jan Vermeer's famous painting "Girl with Pearl Earring." "This modern-day version of Vermeer's painting is one that I worked on with excessive determination - especially with the look in her eyes, which follow the viewer as he or she moves around the room." Brown made the announcement during an artist's reception held Sunday, April 17, 2005, at the Art Gallery of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, in Akron. "I am amazed at the creativity and talent displayed in the artwork," Brown said. "To the teachers, I thank you for the support and guidance you have given these students. Participating in the arts increases overall scholastic performance. I encourage Ohio schools to consider the importance of art education in their budget priorities." Second Place Overall was awarded to Elyria High School Junior Wendy Knapp for her painting entitled "Flowers and Fruit." Revere High School Junior Jackie Hoelting took third place overall for her collage "Downtown." The works of art were judged from 118 entries in six categories including: painting, drawing, photography, mixed/collage, print, and computer generated. As part of a month-long art show at St. Paul's, the artwork will remain on display through Friday, April 29, 2005. The Art Gallery at St. Paul's is free and open to the public Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends from 9 a.m. to noon.
