Glenna Smith, 88, Enjoyed traveling and casino gaming

Photo of Glenna Smith Glenna Smith (nee Peacher), age 88, of Lorain, passed away on the evening of Wednesday January 28th at the Golden Acres Nursing Home.

She was born in Lorain on December 9, 1926.

Mrs. Smith attended the Clearview Schools until she married in 1942. She followed her husband, Howard R. Smith, to Mississippi where he was stationed in the United States Army prior to his departure for Germany and subsequent participation in the Battle of the Bulge during World War II.

Glenna and Howard lived in Lorain for their entire lives.

Mrs. Smith was employed by General Industries of Elyria when her two children were young. Following her husband’s retirement from U.S. Steel, the couple purchased a travel trailer and toured the United States for fifteen years until Howard’s health caused them to buy a home and settle back to Lorain.

Following the death of her husband in 1993, Glenna went to work as a caseworker for Lorain County Children’s Services.

Mrs. Smith was very skilled in her craft works and demonstrated exceptional talent toward needlework. She designed and sewed a multitude of outfits for lawn and yard decorations and also constructed a doll house out of yarn and plastic craft panels which ultimately received a top award at a Pennsylvania craft fair.

In her free time she enjoyed traveling and casino gaming. She also received enjoyment from attending her grandchildren’s sporting events including soccer, baseball, football, and wrestling both here as well as in Crestwood, Kentucky.

She is survived by her son Randy L. Smith and his wife Maureen who reside in Sheffield Lake along with their daughters Love Smith of Lorain and Mickey of New York. She also leaves her daughter Gwen Bailey and her husband Maurice (Mo) of Amherst along with their two sons Dale Bailey and his wife Elizabeth of Amherst and Brian Bailey and his wife Melinda residing in Crestwood, Kentucky. Additional survivors include four great grandchildren, and three great great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, Glenna was preceded in death by her mother Muriel Rose (nee Oberla), by her father Archie Peacher, and by two sisters in infancy.

Visitation will be Wednesday February 4th from 3:00 p.m. until the time of funeral services at 6:30 p.m. in the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Avenue, Lorain. Graveside services will take place at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday in Elmwood Cemetery. Those attending are requested to meet at the cemetery.
