Joseph F. Kovacs, 67, Avid Notre Dame Fan

Photo of Joseph F. Kovacs Joseph F. Kovacs, 67, of Lorain, died Wednesday Nov. 25, 2009 at his home after a brief illness.

Joe was born in Lorain on Oct. 26, 1942, and had been a life-long resident of the city.

Joe was a graduate of Mount St. Francis High School in Muncie, Indiana, and went on to serve as a Specialist 4 in the United States Army stationed in Korea.

Joe retired in 2008 from the United States Post Office in Lorain, where he was a clerk for 29 years. He had previously worked at the former Lorain Products Corporation.

He was a lifelong parishioner of St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Lorain and enjoyed membership with the Knights of St. John Club and the former Canadian Legion.

An extremely avid Notre Dame fan, he also enjoyed following the Detroit Tigers. His interests included golf and bowling. Joe was most known for his generosity to friends and family, especially nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his brother, Stephen Kovacs and wife Jane and sister Theresa Huffman and husband James, all of Lorain, 6 nieces, 2 nephews, 5 great nieces, and 4 great nephews. He was preceded in death by his father, Zoltan “Frank” Kovacs in 1966, mother Helen Kovacs (nee Shuster) in 1983, brother Tony Kovacs in 1998, and nephew Marcus Huffman in 1982.

The family will receive friends Sunday from 2 - 4 p.m. and 6 - 8 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9:30 a.m. in the funeral chapel followed by the mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church, 1305 East Erie Ave., Lorain. The Rev. Joseph West, OFM, Conv, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery in Lorain.
