Michael Campana, 88, WW II Veteran

He was born in Lorain on May 8, 1920, and was a lifelong resident.

Michael graduated from Lorain High School, class of 1938B. He played all sports, excelling in baseball and later fast pitch softball. Michael was a member of many championship teams and was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame in 1985.

Michael was a veteran of WWII, United States Army, 101st Airborne Division. He fought in the European Theater of Operations; France (including the Normandy Invasion), Belgium, Holland and Germany. He received a Battlefield Commission during the war, earning 3 Bronze Stars and numerous other medals. He worked for U.S. Steel, was certified as a Stationary Engineer and retired as a foreman in 1981 after 41 years of service.

Michael was a member of St. Peter Church and an usher at St. Mary’s Church for many years. His memberships also included the Senior Fellowship Club of Lorain, U.S. Steel Management Club, and the 14th Street Gang. Michael enjoyed gardening, bowling, crossword puzzles, and spending time with family and friends.

Michael is survived by daughters, Cindy Campana of Sheffield Village, Toni Davis of Vermilion, sons; Paul Campana of Navarre, Florida, and Tom Campana of Westerville, Ohio.

Michael was preceded in death by his loving wife of 51 years, Josephine (nee Steimel); son Michael; parents Donato and Enrica Campana (nee Arcardini); sister Edith Kromroy; and brothers Louis and Julius.

The family will receive friends at Reidy-Scanlan-Giovannazzo Funeral Home, 2150 Broadway, Lorain (440) 244-1961 on Wednesday, September 3, 2008 from 4-8 PM. Prayers will be held at the funeral home on Thursday at 12:50 PM. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 1:30 PM, Thursday, September 4, 2008 at St. Peter Church, 3655 Oberlin Ave., Lorain. Fr. Ken Wolnowski, Pastor, officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery, Lorain, with military honors provided by American Legion Post 30 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 451, Lorain.
