Arthur Lave, 85, Avon teacher, Lorain Sports Hall of Fame member

Arthur “Art” Lave, 85, a beloved retired teacher of the Avon School District, passed away Friday, April 23, 2004 at New Life Hospice Center St. Joseph in Lorain, Ohio.

Mr. Lave lived in Avon Lake with his wife Margaret (nee Salz) of 60 years. Art was born March 10, 1919 in Auburn, Ohio the son of Edward and Mary (Freiheit) Lave. Mr. Lave was a former teacher and football coach at Lorain High from 1949 to 1959 where “Coach” Lave’s team in 1952 went on to capture the last official grid crown in the original Lake Erie League with a perfect 6-0-0 record. Later Art was inducted into the Lorain Sports Hall of Fame. During years of 1960 to 1964, Art served as football coach for Kenyon College, Gambier, Ohio and from 1960-1978 a guidance counselor and assistant principal for Avon Schools.

He was an active member of the community involved for 25 years in the Kiwanis Club, served as past president of Avon lake Youth Baseball, and was a member of the Avon Lake United Church of Christ. Art was an avid golfer, bowler, and enjoyed painting, sea shell art, and carpentry. While living in Gambier, Ohio he built his own home. Coach received his bachelor degree from Kent State University and went to get his Master’s Degree at Western Reserve University.

Arthur “Art” Lave was the cherished father of Sandra K. Weagle of Columbus, Sharon L. Lave of Lakewood (Michael Yandek) and Alan A. Lave of Portland, Oregon (Barbara), loving grandfather of Rosemary, Wendy, Sadie, Shawn, Carly and Kevin, brother of Edward of Parma, Elsie of Russell of Bradenton, Florida, and the late Martha Black.

Memorials maybe forwarded to the Avon Lake United Church of Christ, 32801 Electric Blvd., Avon Lake, Ohio 44012. Private Funeral Service. Entombment at Resthaven Memory Gardens in Avon. Friends may call at the Busch-Burmeister Funereal Chapel, 163 Avon-Belden Road from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Tuesday.
