Margaret E. Berstling, 82, Enjoyed gardening, cooking, and family gatherings

Margaret E. Berstling (nee Skarupa), 82, of Lorain, died Saturday, January 17, 2004 at Community Health Partners in Lorain following a brief illness.

She was born December 1, 1921 in Nanty Glo, Pennsylvania and had resided in Lorain for most of her life.

Margaret attended Clearview High School. She worked at Western Automatic before she was married.

She was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Lorain where she volunteered to work bingo and help clean the church. She was also a member of Slovak Catholic Sokols Wreath #111 and bowled in the Slovak League at Slovak Lanes. Mrs. Berstling enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, reading, sewing, cooking, baking, babysitting, and attending family gatherings.

She is survived by her daughter: Rosyln Bodkin of Lorain; grandson: Gerald Bodkin and his wife Diane of Vermilion; two great grandchildren; sister Helene Virant of Lorain; brother-in-law Charles Berstling of Lorain; and several nieces and nephews.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Frank “Fritz” Berstling in 1973; parents John Skarupa Sr. and Suzanna (nee Kurucz); sister: Anna Homola; and brothers: John Skarupa, Jr., Andrew Skarupa, Joseph Skarupa, Sylvester Skarupa, and Steven Skarupa in infancy.

The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the Gluvna-Shimo-Hromada Funeral Chapel, 3224 Broadway Ave., Lorain where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. followed by a mass at 9:30 a.m. at St. John Catholic Church, 2143 Homewood Dr., Lorain. The Rev. Thomas Smith, pastor, will officiate. Burial will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Lorain.
