Field Hockey Finishes Season at Wittenberg

November 2, 2009 --
The Oberlin College (Website | Profile) field hockey could not play the roll of spoiler, as they finished their 2009 season falling to Wittenberg 6-0. Playing on the road, Oberlin came out a little flat and with a share of the conference championship at stake the host Tigers came out roaring. Wittenberg scored six first half goals and dominated play from the opening minute.
Oberlin matched Wittenberg’s intensity in the second half, and according to head coach Deb Ranieri, “we actually played pretty well. In the second frame we held one of the best teams in the league scoreless and battled as well as we have all season.”
Unfortunately for the Yeowomen, the six-goal lead was too much to overcome. Oberlin was able to force five second-half penalty corners and spent a considerable amount of time attacking the Wittenberg defense.
Gillian Winbourn led the Yeowomen with four shots on the day including a penalty stroke that she was unable to connect on.
Emily Bigelow went the distance again for Oberlin in the cage saving eight shots in each half for a game high total of 16.
Oberlin finishes the 2009 season with a record of 1-13, with their lone victory coming in a 6-2 stampede over Earlham College.
