The Oberlin College (Website | Profile) women’s soccer team ended its season on a high note, coming from behind to earn a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over Hiram College on Saturday afternoon.
“This was a great win and an amazing way to end our season,” Head Coach Kristen Hayden said. “Everyone played so well and we just fought so hard all season long, I am just so proud of this team.”
Wet field conditions at Hiram forced the contest to be move to Brosius Park in Garrettsville, Ohio, but the field wasn’t much better as both teams battled through the slop from start to finish.
The Yeowomen trailed 1-0 at the break, but did not get discouraged as they battled back to tie it in the second half on a header by Lois Immerman, coming off a picture perfect free kick service from Ryan McChesney
It was an evenly played match throughout, so 90 minutes wasn’t enough to determine a winner. However, Oberlin would not be denied as great touch is space by Lori Sako led to a breakaway opportunity for Amelia Jarvinen, who finished the play off for the game-winner.
Playing in the final matches of their career, seniors Christie Zelnik and Sarah Grabinski each split time in goal.
The Yeowomen, who have suffered through their fair share of tough luck this season, end the year at 5-12-2 overall and 1-7 in the NCAC. The five wins are the most for any Oberlin squad since 2006 when it went 6-12-1.
