Bendix Sponsors Hurricane Relief Program

Barbara Gould, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC

As part of its extensive community involvement initiative, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC announced its sponsorship of a local program to assist the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. The “We’ve Got Your Back” Campaign is part of a nationwide initiative to provide backpacks filled with school supplies and personal items to school-age children affected by the storms.

The “We’ve Got Your Back” program, started by students at Ponchatoula High School in Louisiana, is being promoted by Do Something, Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to providing support to young people desiring to make a difference, and the Nickelodeon television channel.

What began as a local effort has spread to six parishes hit by the hurricanes. The students are spending their free time collecting items, stuffing and distributing the backpacks. The students’ have a goal of distributing 10,000 packs, with 3,000 complete so far.

Bendix is accepting donations from its employees and the entire community for the backpack supplies. The company will donate the backpacks, serve as the drop-off site, stuff and label the packs, and ship them to the high school distribution site. The following is a list suggested supply items:

Pens
Pencils (sharpened)
Erasers
Notebooks
Ruled Filler Paper
Folders
Binders
Crayons
Markers
Toothbrushes
Toothpaste
Socks
Healthy Snacks (non-perishable)

Individuals and community groups may drop off purchased supplies at Bendix, 901 Cleveland Street, Elyria through 5 p.m., Friday, November 11. The drop-off location is located at the security office door, on the east side of the building by the picnic area. Supplies may be dropped off at any time during the day.

Bendix employees coordinate a wide array of community service programs, including an annual United Way campaign and a Harvest for Hunger drive. The company also is serving as a collection site for school supplies at its Kentucky, Indiana and Mexico manufacturing plants.
