December 21, 2007 -- Due to the health risks and the high costs of clean-up associated with household mercury spills, the
City of Elyria (

Profile), in conjunction with the Lorain County Mercury Reduction Collaboration, has a mercury collection program. Residents of Lorain County can bring in the following for recycling:
- Mercury-containing thermometers
- Mercury-containing thermostats
- Mercury-containing barometers
- Mercury-containing blood pressure monitors
To the following locations during the noted days and times:
- Elyria Wastewater Pollution Control Plant, 1194 Gulf Road
Monday – Friday 7:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
- Elyria Fire Station No. 1, 40 Cedar Street
Every Day 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m.
ALL mercury-containing items MUST be sealed inside TWO zip-lock bags prior to leaving your home. (DO NOT bring alcohol thermometers (filled with a red liquid) for recycling as these do not need to be recycled.)
Please call the Lorain County General Health District (Website | Profile) at (440)322-6367, Elyria Wastewater Pollution Control Plant at 366-2211 ext. 0, or Ohio EPA at (330) 963-1211 if you have any questions regarding this program.
DO NOT bring any other containers of liquid mercury to these collection sites as they will not be accepted. Call the Wastewater Pollution Control Plant or the Ohio EPA to arrange to have liquid mercury picked up at your home.
