Title:
lorain county dog pound
Message:
I would like to say a few words in support of the Lorain County Dog Pound. On my many, many trips there over the years, I have seen great improvements, not only in the care of the dogs, but also in the attitudes of the employees. They do care, their job is not pleasant and they take a lot of abuse from some rescues. Gassing is a horrible way to euthanize a dog, unfortunately, more economical than injection. Hosing down the cages to prevent the spread of parvo, distemper etc is not pleasant. There are not enough hands available to hold a dog while a cage is cleaned. If you want to see change go to the commissioners meetings and voice your opinions there in public. Complaining here will not help. I think Jack and his workers do the best they can with what they have to work with. No, it is not a good environment for any dog, but it's a heck of a lot better than most county shelters out there. Erie county shelter is only open for a half hour on Sat. morning for adoptions. Adoptable, healthy dogs are rarely put down at LCDP. The employees work with the rescues frequently to get dogs adopted or pulled out. Yes, I see feces in the kennels and clean it up myself or ask someone to do it and they have never hesitated. If you have ever worked at a shelter, it is impossible to keep the kennels totally clean every minute. If you want dog beds and rugs then raise funds and volunteer to help keep them clean. The county budget would never allow for these things or for a much needed washer and dryer. Terry at the front desk is very compassionate and helpful. I have never once been treated rudely by anyone there. If you haven't been there recently, there are more large clean runs and very few small cages left. If you want to make the lives of the pound dogs better, go there as often as you can and get the dogs out of their cages/kennels and walk them or let them run in the new outside enclosures. Interact with them then go home and network like crazy to get them out of there and into safe homes!
