Phil Van Treuren (

Van Treuren, who began his door-to-door-campaign in March, says that he has shaken the hand of more than a thousand homeowners in the last two months.
"I'm overwhelmed by the encouragement I've received during my Service March," Van Treuren said. "It's obvious that Amherst residents appreciate hard work, and the people I've met have been very responsive to my goal of ending partisanship in our city."
Van Treuren, a former officer in the Army Combat Engineer Corps, says that he got the inspiration for his Service March from the many road marches he went on as a soldier. He is wearing the same combat boots he donned in Army Basic Training while knocking on doors in Amherst.
“They’re actually more comfortable than you might think,” he said. “And they help remind me that knocking on doors is a lot easier than the job our active service members are doing around the world right now.”
Van Treuren says that he is on schedule to finish up knocking on every door in the city within the next month. At that point, he plans to start over again in hopes of meeting residents who he missed the first time around. There are about 4,500 homes in the City of Amherst.
"I'm not going to rest until I've introduced myself to every homeowner in the city," Van Treuren said. "One of the things I learned in the Army was the value of hard work and tenacity, and I want Amherst residents to know just how dedicated I am to working hard for them on city council."
Van Treuren is the owner of Ohio State Web Design and lives in Amherst with his wife, Jessica, and their three children. You can see more pictures, videos and information about his campaign at www.PhilVanTreuren.com.
