(330) 535-5711

Employment:
I am currently chair of the appellate practice group at Brouse McDowell, a law firm in Akron, Ohio.

Education:
BA University of Pittsburgh
JD Cleveland Marshall College of Law, Cleveland StateUniversity

Community Involvement:
I am currently the President of Summit County Council. From 1993 through 1999, I served as a Judge on the Ninth District Court of Appeals, the position I am seeking in this election. I am a member of the Committee of Visitors of Cleveland Marshall College of Law, a member of the Executive Board of the Downtown Akron Partnership, a member of the Summit County Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee, a member of the Board of the Akron/Summit Visitors and Convention and John S. Knight Center, a member of the Charles F. Scanlon Inn of Court, and a member of the American, Federal, Ohio, and Akron Bar Associations.

Family:
I have been married to Kathie for 32 years. We have three children: Matthew (28), Erin (25), and Ashley (21).

Why are you running for public office?
Having previously served as a Judge on the Court of Appeals, I am acutely aware of the importance of the position. During the course of a trial, a trial judge makes many decisions and he or she does not always have the time to do extensive research before making those decisions. Inevitably, even the best trial judge will make mistakes. If a party to the case believes the trial judge made a mistake and that mistake hurt that party, he or she will appeal to the Court of Appeals. Appellate Judges take the time to do the research to determine whether the trial judge made a mistake and, if so, whether that mistake hurt the party appealing. The judges of the Court of Appeals make sure that the parties in the trial court were treated fairly and received justice. I am running for this position because I cannot think of anything I could do at this point in my life than make sure that parties who come before the courts in Lorain, Medina, Wayne, and Summit Counties receive justice.

What would you like to accomplish if elected or if re-elected?
Treat each party who comes before the Court with dignity and respect while making sure justice has been done.

In what ways can web, mobile and social technology be used in the government sector?
I would like to see the Court of Appeals go to electronic filing. It has been done successfully in the Federal Courts, and, I believe, it would help reduce litigation expense.

What one bit of information do people not normally know about you?
I am a member of the first generation of my family to graduate from high school and I am the first member of my family to graduate from college. The first lawyer I ever met, I met on my first day of law school. Now, I have a son who is a lawyer, a daughter who is a lawyer, and another daughter who will probably be a lawyer. My family and I are the personification of the American Dream. As a result, I feel a high commitment to give back to my community.
