The Lorain County Auditor has established a tax mapping system that allows his tax maps to be linked with various real estate and appraisal information. This is called a G.I.S. or Geographic Information System. With this technology, one can get information from a highly accurate, easily read tax map regarding owner, appraisal and other information pertaining to that property or to properties surrounding it. This map can also be viewed over a highly accurate color aerial!
The Auditor's G.I.S. project has been in the making for over 5 years and will prove to be a valuable tool for property searching and data acquisition.
The Auditor's first phase - raster mapping has been in operation since 1996. This system lets one view a scanned tax map from several avenues of querying possibilities. A parcel can be queried by owner name, location address, subdivision name, deed or instrument number, and also by conveyance and census tract number. Once the map is located, it can be printed by the click of a button.
The second phase of mapping is vector mapping. Vector mapping utilizes AutoCad or other engineering products that produce an accurate representation of the legal descriptions of parcels on record. These maps form a "seamless" map of the entire county that can be joined or linked to other maps, aerials or tabular information. These maps are in full color with detailed information and brilliant, accurate color photography. Both mapping systems are "self serve" and user friendly. They are now available within the Auditor's Office and will be available on the internet in the summer of 2002.
