The Lorain County Dog Kennel is in dire need of improvement. I implore you to change the policies of this facility for the well-being of every poor creature that walks through its door. These dogs have done nothing wrong to deserve such inhumane treatment.
I beg you to walk through its doors unannounced one day to see what really goes on, on a day-to-day basis. Or, send someone you know in your place, someone the employees would not recognize. I guarantee you will get a better sense of this terrible place by taking such an approach.
The employees I have encountered are cruel and appear to have an utter lack of compassion toward animals. I find this to be unbelievable in this day and age. Are these individuals so burned out from all of the euthanizing they have done that they treat these animals poorly as a defense mechanism? And, when the public enters this facility, they are not treated much better. These employees should be thrilled that people want to adopt and save these animals.
On Friday, May 9, 2008, I went to the Kennel and rescued a beautiful fawn Doberman pinscher. Every dog had a cold wet concrete surface to lay or sit on. There was not a single bed, toy or cookie in sight. At least the Cuyahoga County Dog Kennel has cots and toys for its dogs. The Doberman was extremely thin and its hip bones were protruding and red. A simple examination of this dog would have revealed how painful it must have been for her to lay on cold wet concrete. It was obvious to me and my friend that this gentle creature was quite traumatized.
My friend also brought to my attention a particular cage that a Doberman mix had been in before he was killed earlier in the week. She had remembered the cage number. The cage was so small, we felt sick that anyone would force a dog of his size into it. What is wrong with people? Why do the people who work here not care? It is truly sickening.
It does not appear that these dogs are taken outside to grassy areas to do their job. It is my understanding that they are left to do it in their cages, hence the cold wet floor. As an individual experienced with dogs, and particularly Doberman Pinschers, I can attest that most animals do not like to go where they sleep. This poor dog appeared thankful when I took her outside to a grassy area and she urinated for such a long time, that I felt terrible.
There are many individuals in this community who would be willing to help with the changes that need to be made at this Kennel. I would love to speak with you personally about my experience on Friday and my other experiences at this facility. Other county kennels could serve as models for Lorain County. Something must be done now.
I do understand that many of these animals will not be saved from being euthanized, but can we at least give them some love and dignity beforehand? What harm is there in that? Maybe if these creatures were treated better, individuals visiting the Kennel would be more inclined to adopt them? I know people who will not even go to this Kennel because it is so emotionally upsetting to do so.
I look forward to hearing from you to discuss this in greater detail. Thank you for your kindness and compassion in this most important matter.
